Spain Parkâs âheavyweightsâ knock off No. 5 Hewitt-Trussville
Head coach Tim Vakakes fought back tears as he described Spain Park’s 50-29 road win over fifth-ranked Hewitt-Trussville in a Class 7A, Region 3 contest on Friday.
“These kids are heavyweights,” Vakakes said after his squad spoiled Hewitt’s Senior Night. “We have battled through so much this season. We battled injuries and ourselves. Our coaches stayed positive and kept challenging our kids – every kid. It is hard to describe my feelings.”
Sophomore quarterback Brock Bradley led the Jaguars (5-3, 3-3), throwing for a career-high 358 yards and 3 touchdowns. Bradley, who also ran for a 1-yard score, fired touchdown strikes of 26, 46 and 54 yards.
“To win the big games, you have to get good, great quarterback play,” Vakakes said. “Brock had an outstanding game.”
Hewitt-Trussville (6-3, 4-2) jumped to early 7-0 lead after Peyton Floyd ran 36 yards for a score.
After Bradley found Logan Brownlee on a reserve double pass, the Jaguars never trailed again.
Floyd tried to keep the Huskies in the game. The senior accounted for 316 yards of offense, running for 121 yards and 2 TDs and throwing for 195 yards and another touchdown.
Game ball: Jaguars wide receiver Jonathan Bibbs had 7 catches for 151 yards, including a 54-yard scoring reception on a third-and-8 to give the Jags a 14-point lead.
Winning play: Kelby Roberson intercepted a Floyd pass and returned the turnover 92 yards to seal the upset.
